Wow, have been on this route a few times on various bikes but just did it on a proper sports machine and it is awesome. You will be grinning like a buffoon inside your lid from the first bends at Dalwhinnie.
Take care on the narrow early sections going East to West. Trucks coming the opposite way take up most of the road. A bit hairy but ok if you stay sharp. I rode it on Tuesday 27/03/2012 glorious. You must do this at least once.

Stayed in Newtonmoore for 5 days whilst touring the highlands. At the bottom of the guest house drive the A86 entered the national speed limit zone and biking nirvana lays ahead, all the way to Speenbridge. Did this stretch twice a day, every day, its superb. Picture of a dam at the end of Loch Lagan uploaded.

Have done this road many times, trouble is you get a little carried away with yourself in the sheer pleasure of riding here, it pays to slow things up a little and take the time to have a look where you are.. Sounds daft I know but its that nice a place to be let alone ride, can't recommend this one enough, there's a few stop/view points along the way, if your doing the Highlands this has to be on your list of must do's

This is one to look forward too after the boring A9. Leave the A9 at Dalwhinnie go through the village and start with the bend that goes completely around the distillery. After this you get a series of fast staights with double bends at the end to take you to the A86 towards Fort William. The road climbs for miles, twisting and turning to Loch Laggan. A fast run alongside the loch, then a final twisting rush down to Roybridge. Be warned, the local police respect skilfull riding, but not speeding through villages. Speed trap regular in the 30 limit at Roybridge. Roybridge Hotel OK, but current owners selling up.
