Ditto to comments on Police presence - plenty of them, and keen to catch transgressors.

Worth checking ferry times to avoid long chains of heavy goods traffic. In recent years a few climbing lanes and dual carriageway sections have been added, but there are still too many commemorative crosses by the roadside as testament to ill-conceived overtakes.

That said, great views of the Solway Firth, and if youre happy to stick to speed limits, a rewarding ride.

Very heavy police presence. This is the main route to catch the ferries at Stranraer. The police are always looking to catch the one who is late for his ferry. Lots of unmarked cars including a Subaru Impreza. Recently they have taken to hiding a patrol car up a side entrance near Glenluce and just peeking around the corner with a hand held radar. Camera vans operate regularly anywhere along the A75 from Gretna to Stranraer. Quite a few places to stop and grab a bite to eat. The Old School Tea Room at Ringford is a little bit pricey but has really good home cooked food, but no bacon butties here. Plenty of roadside vans though to get a good bacon butty and a cuppa. Try the one near Creetown in the layby. For any F1 fans David Coulthard has a museum in Twynholm, it has a tea room too. If you want a pleasant ride it is ok as long as you stick to the speed limits and dont catch a batch of trucks heading to or from the ferry. Ideally use it to link up the A713 route.

There's always a heavy police presence on this road, lot's of unmarked cars too. It's not a bad thing because I've seen a lot of poor driving on this road.

I too would reckon this is one to avoid, being the main road to Stranraer there seem to be a lot of police around whenever I've been here. There must be better choices around here! Over to you the locals.

A good selection of fast straights and some nice corners on this route down towards the Mull of Galloway. Some police activity in the area, perhaps this is Aprilia's fault!!
